[SHINHAN Zoom In Trade SEP] The Chuseok Holiday of Olden Days
Name : SHINHAN 2020.09.28

The Ministry of National Defence clock runs regardless how it is hung.

On the TV screen in the lounge of Incheon Airport, a report on emergency issues of the National Defense Commission is being covered. The subject of conversation between the National Assembly members and the Minister of National Defence, who ask and answer questions, is unknown.

It could be assumed they might be discussing the case of a young man’s family who had a question if the Ministry of National Defence clock was going with the same speed as the other clocks for their son.

The coronavirus outbreak began around the Lunar New Year holidays last winter.  When this outbreak started, everybody got caught off guard and wondered "Will it be over in a few weeks or a few months?" Now Fall is coming and the Chuseok holiday is near. Time is constantly going regardless of the circumstances.

This month's Cover Story is 'Matters to Attend to Customs Refund that is Helpful for Financial Improvement'. Voice From the Field is 'Application Guide for the Use of Taxpayer Rights Protection System’, and Inside Vietnam covers ‘Refunds of Customs Duty on Re-Exported Goods’. In addition, Customs Trade Related Law Changes is the 'Partial Revision to the Customs Act', and Customs Case is ‘Case of HS Code Classification for Educational Toys and Video Game Devices’.

In the past, the Chuseok holiday was the time the largest number of people moved. People moved from east to west to north and south for family gatherings. The travel time, which took more than twice as long as usual, did not stop the massive movement.

It could not take the desire and responsibility away from people that wanted to be with their families.  Children had to eat and sleep in cars on highways that would turn into a huge parking lot.  Prior to getting on the highway, people had to line up in front of Seoul Station ticket office from very early in the morning to buy train tickets for Mugunghwa train or Saemaeul train. Nothing could stop this massive movement of the nation.

The future that came before its due time

Every year during the Chuseok holiday, 75% of the people in the country headed home to spend time with their families. According to a survey conducted by a newspaper in early September this year, only 26% of respondents decided to visit their families during the holiday season. Performing the rituals of ancestral memorial service through virtual gathering has been recommended by some. The values that were accepted as common sense from the olden days up until only a few months ago are becoming old normal. The era of the new normal has rattled and hit the whole earth.

As the saying goes, ‘it is a paradox that to survive in the Corona era, people need to stay apart.’*, it is a virtue to minimize face-to-face contact between people in everyday life. If keeping personal hygiene and dressing clean clothes every morning was considered a social normal, now wearing a mask has become the criterion for determining whether you can come out in front of others. Technology is rapidly developing due to the new normal that students go to school and workers go to work in front of a computer at home without leaving the house at all.

In the future that came before its due time, there are still many old and new normals mixed up, and we are perplexed but getting adjusted to it. Nevertheless, no matter how much time passes, even if the pandemic continues ten times or twenty times longer, there are things that need to be kept.

It is normal to show respect and gratitude to your ancestors even if you do it through virtual means at your place of residence on Chuseok holiday. Not only sharing love with loved ones and those in need of love, but also trying not to lie, not being arrogant, having humble thoughts, saying humble words, and showing humble actions will be the ‘normal’ that we should keep and exercise for our whole lives.

Time goes by. We don't know where the present reality is taking us, and we don't know what pandemics will come in the future. But we know what steps to take at this moment. Step by step, sincerely and truthfully.

We wish you a pleasant Chuseok holiday.
